I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.Billy Joel

Ozzik: The MediaPortal guide, part II. Setup Wizard. 26-1-07 10:34:26
Configuration Wizard

After performing a fresh install of MediaPortal, we need to do a few basic settings before we can use the program. On the desktop there will be two new icons created: MediaPortal and MediaPortal Setup.

First we start MediaPortal Setup. This first-time configuration will be done in a wizard. If we run the Setup again at a later moment, we will be presented with a more advanced configuration interface. If, for whatever reason, you need to have the wizard again at a later time, then you need to rename or delete the MediaPortal.xml file in your MediaPortal folder.

Click "Next" in the welcome screen

In this screen you can configure some general settings. Please note that any selections you make now can be changed again afterwards by running the Setup again. For a detailed description of all these options, see General Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

After configuring your settings, click "Next".

One of the best features of MediaPortal is that you can change it appearance by choosing different skins. In this screen you can select your preferred skin. You can also see a preview how to skin will look in the preview area. More skins can be downloaded at a later time. For a more detailed description of this screen, see Skin Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

After selecting your preferred skin click "Next".

MediaPortal can scan your hard drives for media files to show, play etc. Click "Scan" to have the setup wizard scan your system for media files.

When the wizard has finished scanning click "Next"

If MediaPortal finds a supported analog TV-card, it will show the Analog TV Configuration screen.

First set your country in the TV Tuner section, and check if your city is Channel Download section. If it is, then select it and click "Download".

When your city isn't listed you have to manually set the channels. Select the correct Input Source, and click "Scan" to start the search for TV channels. After the scanning has finished, you will have a list of all found channels. You can rename the channels (double-click on the name) and delete the ones you don't want.

For a more detailed description of all available options, see Autotune Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

Click "Next" when you are finished.

If your TV-card is also equipped with a radio receiver, you can add radio channels in basically the same way as TV channels. For a more detailed description of all available options, see Autotune Radio Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

After you've setup all your channels click "Next"

The Electronic Program Guide or EPG makes it possible to download a TV program guide from the internet and use it to schedule recording, see what shows are on next, etc. As there a many different ways to load the EPG data, separate guides are available in UserGuides/Country based EPG and MediaPortalSetup WebEPG.

If you have DVB card check "EPG from DVB" otherwise disable it.

For a more detailed description of all available options, see EPG Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

Click the "Scheduler" tab to set scheduler options.

These settings configure ?XMLTV. I recommend skipping this section and instead running WebEPG after the MediaPortal configuration, mostly because WebEPG is more flexible and no guide has been written for XMLTV yet...

For a more detailed description of all available options, see EPG Scheduler Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

Click "Next" to continue to the next section.

If you are the proud owner of a remote control that is supported by MediaPortal, you can enable it in this screen by checking the box for the remote control you own.

For a more detailed description of all available options, see Remote Controller Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

Click "Next" to continue the wizard.

MediaPortal can show you the weather forecast for your city for the next four days. Begin by choosing with the basic settings for temperature, wind speed and update interval.

After that you can add one or more cities to the list. To do this click the "Add" button.

Write the name of the city you want to have and click "Search".

The window expands and shows a list of possible cities. Choose the correct one, you will then be able to look at the weather info for this city when you start MediaPortal.

For a more detailed description of all available options, see Weather Settings in MediaPortal Setup.

Click "OK" and then click "Next".

Congratulations, you've reached the end of the wizard. Now you can start using MediaPortal with the MediaPortal icon on you desktop, or perform more advanced configuration with the MediaPortal Setup icon.

Enjoy!

Next: Advanced Setup.
