In the last decade or so, science has discovered a tremendous amount about the role emotions play in our lives. Researchers have found that even more than IQ, your emotional awareness and abilities to handle feelings will determine your success and happiness in all walks of life, including family relationships.John Gottman, Ph.D. Author

Ozzik: The beginners guide to HTPC, Part IV. 18-1-07 21:40:11
Next you have to decide which operating system suits you the most.
But wait. Don't just shout out your favorite OS's name and skip to the next chapter. It's not that trivial after all. Here's why.

As I'm not familiar at all with the Tiger OS X, I won't be talking about it at all, and MAC enthusiasts will decide for themselves what do they need.
The only OS's I work with are Windows 2000/XP and Linux.

Let's start with Linux. As far as I know there are two most popular applications for the HTPC: MythTV and Freevo. Both of them are great and have their share of fans, but both of them lack in such simple thing as catalog for the TV shows collection. For me it was a huge disappointment, as I'm really a Linux fan, but what can you do, when you have a 200GB of TV series and cannot have them organized within the software.

But hey, this is just me. I know there are a lot of people not even watching the TV, not to talk about storing the shows on a hard drive, so first go through all the details of those and the windows-based ones, and then decide.

This actually makes it the case, where you first have to select the program you're gonna use for Media Center and then the operating system itself.
My personal favorite is Meedio, but I'm gonna write about it in a Meedio forum.
I can only tell you that function-wise it's pretty much the best there is, but don't jump to conclusions, I'm not here to tell you what to use, I'm here to give you the options and maybe just recommend something I myself am happy with.

Another advise I can give you is not to use the awful MS MCE - Windows Media Center Edition, although you're probably best have this system installed on the PC, using the MCE function itself is highly not recommended(by me that is). Kind of a paradox, I know, but you'll learn more about it in the appropriate forums.

So to sum up: it's MythTV(KnoppMyth or any other distro with the MythTV package installed)/Freevo for Linux or any other windows-based soft on MS MCE or regular XP.

Vista? No, thanks. Not in this lifetime. Let them keep on worrying about their DRM crap(and what not, just not the customers). Me, I prefer freedom.

So this is probably the end of this guide. Now you have to actually decide which way to go. Feel free to consult in our forums, read the guides and enjoy your HTPC!
